Frequently asked questions

Is 72 hours prior to departure or arrival? + -

You are advised to check with your destination on the government website as rules are constantly changing. Some common UK holiday destinations eg Spain and France require the test to be performed 72 hours prior to ARRIVAL at the destination.

Other destinations eg Netherlands   require the test to be performed prior to DEPARTURE but with a shorter time frame of 48hours. ALWAYS CHECK BEFORE YOU TEST! Information correct on 24th August 2021.

What is a fit to fly certificate? + -

A fit to fly certificate is a medical certificate signed by a doctor stating that you are medically fit to travel abroad. If you test negative, one of our NHS General Medical Council certified doctors will write and sign a certificate that states that you are medically fit to travel.

You are likely to be asked to present this certificate to the airline before boarding and at immigration desks when you arrive at your destination.

Why can’t I just have a standard NHS test? + -

The government website states that the necessary fit-to-fly certificates cannot be provided by the NHS Test and Trace testing service. You must use a private company that provides tests. At PHC Testing, we offer private testing with UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) approved laboratories. A certificate, written and signed by one of our NHS General Medical Council certified doctors, will be provided upon confirming a negative test deeming you as fit-to-fly.

Does the country I am flying to require me to have a COVID-19 test and present a fit-to-fly certificate? + -

The rules for travel to each country differs. Therefore, it is paramount that you check the requirements for the country you are travelling to in plenty of time. Remember that some countries are not allowing any travellers entering from the UK due to new emerging variants of the virus.

The search function on the government website provides up to date information, accessible at https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.

The following website is also endorsed by the government website, and provides accurate information regarding current requirements https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/

Which type of test do I need? + -

There are two main tests currently being used to detect COVID-19; the PCR test and the antigen test. The vast majority of countries require you to have PCR testing which is available at all of our test centres. This involves a sample being taken by a swab of the throat and nose and this then being sent to one of our UKAS accredited laboratories for analysis.

How soon before I fly do I need a test? + -

The rules for travel to each country differs. Therefore, it is paramount that you check the requirements for the country you are travelling to in plenty of time. Some countries are not allowing any travellers entering from the UK due to new emerging variants of the virus. Most countries require you to have a negative COVID PCR test within 72 hours but countries’ regulations are constantly changing and you must check the guidelines and regulations before you travel. These can be found through a number of resources;

Do I need to consider any transit stops? + -

Yes. Some countries will require you to meet their test requirements even if you are transiting through the country. Therefore, it is imperative that you check the relevant websites or contact the relevant customer services.

For example, if you transit through Germany you are required to have a test no more than 48 hours before entry into the country. Even if your final destination accepts testing that was conducted 72 hours before departure, this would not be accepted at your Germany transit.

We strongly recommend checking the requirements for every country you will transit through, not just your final destination.
